Adoptive Family

Kristen and Marc

Prospective adoptive parents Kristen and Marc on a carousel

Hello.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. We know that you must be experiencing many emotions right now, including stress, confusion and anxiety. Our names are Kristen and Marc. While we had hoped to have a child soon after getting married in December 2006, it has taken us much longer to start our family. We welcomed our son Timothy into our lives in early October 2009. He has brought us incredible joy and happiness. We are very excited to add another child to our lives and for Timothy to have a brother or sister with whom to play and share his life. We have decided to adopt our next child and look forward to providing a stable, happy and loving home for this child.

We met on-line in 2004, after Marc read Kristen’s personal ad and noticed our similar backgrounds. We soon discovered that we had a great deal in common. Both of us have a niece and nephew who are twins, our siblings live in Wisconsin, and Kristen went to the same college as Marc’s parents. As we continued to date, we realized our interests and goals were very similar. After about a year and a half Marc realized that Kristen was the person he was meant to be with and proposed.

Kristen is the middle child and has an older brother and younger sister. Her sister was adopted as an infant and Kristen is the godmother of her niece and nephew. Marc is the younger of two sons. His brother is married and has three children. All of our nieces and nephews, as well as Kristen’s parents, live in the same state, which allows us to spend holidays with most of our family. Marc’s parents live less than two hours from us and we visit them regularly, either at their home or ours or sometimes we meet halfway for brunch, to visit museums or to see a ball game.

Southern Los Angeles County is where we call home. Close to the beach but also within sight of the mountains on a clear day, our three-bedroom home is on a tree-lined street, near spacious parks and in a good school district. The yard has native California plants, seasonal flowers, and a large patio. During the summer we have friends over for cookouts and entertain on the patio. Our community is rather large and has its own symphony, libraries, museums, restaurants, coffeehouses and neighborhoods that we like to explore. Every day we go for our morning walk with Timothy and the dog, Newman, a Cairn terrier, to one of our favorite destinations, usually a coffeehouse, near the water. We are also close to Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm and the Aquarium of the Pacific and look forward to taking our kids to all of these places.

Timothy has brought immeasurable joy to our lives. Each day we marvel at how amazing it is to be caring for our new baby. We have so much fun holding him, reading to him, talking to him, and watching him grow. All of his grandparents were able to visit him shortly after he was born and Kristen’s sister flew out for a visit too. We are fortunate to have been able to take substantial time off work to spend with our newborn and we look forward to doing the same with the baby we adopt.

As a professor at a local university, Kristen enjoys her teaching and research. A very rewarding part of her job is the work Kristen does as a mentor for students who are the first in their families to attend college. She has been mentoring students for several years and still keeps in touch with many who have graduated, following their lives as they grow. She has flexibility in her teaching schedule, which will allow her to stay at home with the children most days and still teach a few nights a week after Marc gets home from work. This will give Marc precious individual time with the children, too.

Marc is an attorney working for the government. After graduating from law school, he worked in the Army JAG Corps for three years. Marc enjoyed being a military lawyer but decided not to make that his career and sought another job at the end of his tour of active duty. He moved to a private law firm but after nearly three years with the firm decided he wanted to work again for the federal government. Marc really enjoys his current job, especially the opportunity to interact with his clients and practice labor and international trade law. While his work is demanding and sometimes hectic, Marc is almost always home before 6:00 p.m. and he rarely works on the weekends.

One of the things that attracted us to each other was our love for outdoor activities and traveling. The two of us have competed in multiple triathlons and we enjoy hiking, golfing, kayaking, playing tennis and going to the gym. Once our children reach the appropriate age, we can’t wait to include them in as many family outdoor activities as possible.

In addition to knitting, Kristen enjoys crossword puzzles and cooking. Her grandmother taught her to cook when Kristen was seven and her first dish was eggplant parmigiana. Marc enjoys planning trips, photography and woodworking. Marc has a small workshop in the garage where he repairs broken items, tackles home improvement projects, and brainstorms future projects.

Kristen’s work gives her many opportunities to travel and we try to turn these work-related events into mini-vacations. We took advantage of a work trip to China by adding Thailand to the itinerary as our honeymoon destination. Last March, we traveled to Kyoto, Japan, where Kristen presented her research at a conference, after which we spent a few days sight-seeing. Throughout the year we seek out opportunities to take holiday or seasonal trips to visit family or to explore different areas in California and the United States.

When we began talking about building our family, adopting a child was always part of our plan. While we are very fortunate to have Timothy, we look forward to bringing another child into our home and our lives. Having a newborn in our home has been wonderful and we cherish the thought of having another join our family. The two of us are very excited to add to our family, but are relying on you for the opportunity to do so. Your child would always know that you made this possible for us and we would send regular updates and photos to you, if you wish.

Both of us look forward to learning more about you and your plans for your baby.
